The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that runs from your heel to the ball of your foot and holds up the arch. Standing on hard floors, walking in flat or soft shoes, and long days on your feet stretch it on every step. Over time that repeated stretch is what most people feel, sharpest in the first steps of the morning and after sitting.

It's rigid and contoured, and it's part of the shoe rather than an insert. It supports the arch and the heel from the back of the foot to the ball, which limits how far the plantar fascia stretches with each step. The coil under the heel compresses about an inch and returns 50% of the impact, so less of it reaches the ligament in the first place. Together they take the two loads the plantar fascia normally carries: stretch and impact.
