What is an Orthotic?
An orthotic (orthosis) is a rigid device used to correct and/or stabilize the foot. Today there are many brands of soft insoles that claim to be "orthotics" however most are soft. An orthotic needs to but extremely "rigid" otherwise its ability to correct or stabilize the foot is greatly diminished. Insoles are simply a soft insert designed to go into a shoe, and should never be considered an "orthotic" or used in the place of a true orthotic. Purpose A true orthotic is a very powerful tool which has the ability to enhance performance or reducing injury and pain. Orthotics are used by everyone from athletes to the elderly to accommodate biomechanical deformities and a variety of soft tissue inflammatory conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and very often to for over-pronation. An orthotic can realigning foot joints while standing, walking or running. Orthotics are used heavily within the orthopedic, Podiatrist and Chiropractic communities as means of treating foot, knee, hip, and spine ailments and deformities.
Custom vs. After-market Orthotic
There are many brands of after-market orthotics. The advantage of after-market or prefabricated orthotics is that they are relatively inexpensive however since they are not designed for any one particular foot the fit is not as good as custom orthotic. A custom orthotic on the other had has a great fit but is usually very expensive ranging from $200-$1,000. The greatest limitation on both custom and after-market orthotics is they are not designed to fit your shoe. As a result the shoe may get very tight, be unnaturally lifted or become unstable.
